Savannah's Dream
It was Savannah’s dream to become an organic farmer when she grew up. She hoped to educate others, especially children, on how eating healthy, organic foods, and growing them in an earth-friendly and sustainable manner, benefits not only our bodies, but ultimately, wildlife, and the earth we all share.
Her dream began while she herself battled an extremely rare and aggressive cancer of her heart. During this time, she came to love and appreciate every living creature, and became passionate about their preservation and protection, thinking so little about herself and her own situation. Because of her condition, Savannah’s activities were limited, and she spent many hours watching television, mostly choosing to watch Animal Planet and Discovery Channel. She was saddened to learn how we were depleting our natural resources and endangering our own species as well as many we share the planet with. She wanted to make it better for everyone. It was inspirational to hear such big ideas from such a little girl.
Savannah never knew she had cancer, as her parents never wanted her to live in fear for her own life. She did know, however, that she was sick, and no one was quite sure what had caused it. Savannah’s parents began to investigate the potential dangers to our bodies from pesticides on the foods we eat and toxins in the products we use, every day of our lives. As a result, her family made many changes in their daily lives, the biggest of which was switching to a completely organic, unprocessed diet. This fascinated Savannah, and when she observed the way advertisers target children with such unhealthy foods, her idea began to form.
One day she asked her parents why everyone didn’t eat organically, when it was healthier for our bodies and our world. When they told her that there were several reasons, including the fact that organic foods may not be as easy to find, and may often be more expensive than conventional food, she thought about this long and hard. Savannah decided then and there that it was her mission in life to spread the word about, and educate children on the benefits of organically grown food. She would tell her family, friends, and anyone who would lend an ear about the organic farm she would one day run, and the ways she would encourage children to eat an organic and healthy diet. In fact, she told her parents that at her farm, which would have a restaurant with healthy choices for kids, “the organic food would be less expensive than the other food!” She filled her time drawing pictures of the farm she would someday have, and the foods she would grow, as well as creating menus and recipes of the foods she would create from her harvests. And she was only seven.
Savannah did not live to fulfill her dream, but it was her parents’ intent to keep that dream alive. They, along with loving volunteers, started Savannah’s Organic Ranch, a non-profit organization aimed at educating the community about organic foods and products, and how consuming these products, can make the world a better place, just as Savannah had dreamed.
